After spending the night camped outside Moab Brewery (which we later found broke city ordinances... oops 😬), our first stop on Utah’s ‘Big 5’ NP tour was Arches National Park. It may come as a shock to you but believe it or not, there are in fact tons of natural arches there - over 2,000 of them! Although there are no National Parks in Idaho, this state should not be missed as it's one of the most naturally beautiful landscapes we drove through! From mountains colored with fall leaves, to crystal clear rivers, to hot springs jumping, and bald eagles soaring over our heads, we loved the scenery of this state. Even more epic than the setting, a group of our friends trekked out to Boise to help Marlie celebrate turning 30, which was so awesome to have a more normal moment in this chaotic year (don't worry all precautions were taken!). Even though this year has really tested us all in every way possible, having great friends and family in our lives is something we've been reminded to cherish even more. While we initially had to skip Glacier NP due to heavy smoke cover, we are FREAKING STOKED that the weather played nice - slightly smoky but no snow - so we could experience this beautiful park at the end of the season. Driving the Going-to-the-Sun road was so spectacular as we weaved along the mountainside staring down into the picturesque valleys below with so many waterfalls and rivers. While Yellowstone is most notably known for its geysers ⛲, particularly Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic, this NP has so much more to offer from lush valleys filled with bison, wolves, foxes, and bears, to a miniature Grand Canyon, to breathtaking lakes and rivers. It took us two whole days to drive around the 2 million+ acres that encompasses this beautiful spot of the world. While there really isn't any hiking other than flat walking trails, you will rack up miles both on the feet and in the car scurrying from one spectacular feature to the next! After spending another glorious night in a Walmart parking lot, we got up before the sun to drive through the Dubois Valley into the Grand Teton NP. Beginning our morning with the sunlight gently hitting the red rocks and then coming into the most GORGEOUS welcome view we've encountered so far was breathtaking! The Teton mountains jagged up in the background, crystal clear lakes, and all the yellow, orange, and reds for as far as the eye could see was purely spectacular! After the unexpected beauty of Theodore Roosevelt NP we headed to Badlands NP with high expectations, but sadly the reality fell a bit short. It wasn't that the Badlands were, well, bad but more that they lacked the vibrant fall colors of TRNP and the rocks looked pretty stark in the midday sun. It was only in late afternoon that some of those vibrant hues were visable. Due to the intense smoke from the wildfires, we decided to change our route to be able to see the sky and breath clean air soooo we drove ~1,200 miles to North Dakota!! While we didn't have super high expectations for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, we were blown away with the vibrant shades of the badlands, cute prairie dogs towns, and all the fall colors a basic betch could ask for! . While the Olympic National Park was pretty smokey and any long distance views were closed off, we were blown away by how gorgeous the Hall of Mosses in the Hoh Rainforest are.
